Close Nightstand

The Close nightstand starts from a simple decision about how a nightstand actually gets used: not just as a surface, but as storage that has to work from either side of a bed. Its single compartment opens with a removable tray reachable from both directions, so whoever is nearer does not have to reach across. A slender cross-shaped base keeps the piece visually light despite the storage it carries, and a floor-resting version is offered as well.

The nightstand is built in two finish combinations that swap which material leads. One version pairs a structure in open pore Moka lacquered oak with a glossy Clay lacquered top and a matching matt Clay interior tray; the other reverses it, with a matt Clay lacquered structure and an oak top and tray finished in open pore Moka lacquer. The interior compartment is built in 13 mm MDF with a divider, and the tray itself is formed by a folding process. The base is metal, painted in a satin Bronze finish, with a square tubular upright and a flatter tubular cross section underfoot, set on protective non-scratch rubber slides. Because the satin finish is applied by hand, the exact tone of the base can vary slightly from one nightstand to the next.

In a bedroom, the two-sided tray suits a primary suite where a nightstand sits between two sleepers, though it works just as well as a single guest room table. Designers should think about which surface, wood or lacquer, they want as the dominant material in the room.
