Astrum Dining Table

Astrum works from one structural idea across its whole range of shapes: a sawhorse base-frame built from a single die-cast aluminium support with a painted finish. On rectangular tables that support is made of two or three elements joined by a crosspiece, while on round tables three elements connect instead at the base of a steel ring. Each support has a triangular section, lifted slightly off the ground at an angle, which is what lets a strong base still read as light rather than blocky underneath the top.

The top comes in a choice of wood veneer, a lacquered finish or marble, built over an MDF or wood particle panel and finished glossy or matt, so the same base can carry a warmer wood surface or a heavier stone one depending on the room. The upper crosspiece is steel and the lower one is an aluminium extrusion. Only the round versions take a swivel tray, built in veneered wood or marble and turning on a laminate and aluminium mechanism running on steel balls.

As a dining table, Astrum is built for shared meals, meetings and the kind of conversation that happens around a table. The round version, the only one with a swivel tray, suits a room planned around a central table, while the rectangular and oval shapes suit a longer room. Designers choosing between the wood, lacquer and marble tops should weigh how much visual weight the top should carry against the light aluminium base underneath it.
