Papilio’s bed carries over the continuous, single material line of the armchair it shares a name with, though the sides taper less sharply here than on the chair, since a bed reads differently at full scale than a seat does. The mattress sits almost flush with the perimeter of the frame rather than up inside a deep border, which is the detail that keeps the whole piece looking like one continuous form rather than a frame with a mattress dropped into it.
Underneath the upholstery, the frame is built from tubular steel and steel profiles, padded with a flexible, cold shaped polyurethane foam and finished with a polyester fibre cover before the outer fabric or leather goes on. The slatted base rests on a support crosspiece in tubular steel, and the feet combine steel with a plastic material at the point where they meet the floor. The bed is upholstered in either fabric or leather, and is built in five sizes.
Because Papilio is offered across five sizes with the same continuous shape, it works equally in a primary bedroom built around a large bed as the main piece of furniture, or in a smaller guest room where a lower, simpler bed is wanted. A designer specifying it across several bedrooms in the same home can keep the same bed language throughout by choosing the size for each room rather than changing the design.
