Surface

Surface works from two references named directly by the source material: a Piet Mondrian painting and the geometric work of the American artist Donald Judd. That gives the series a clear method, building each small table from a few flat, minimal volumes set against each other rather than relying on applied decoration.

The smaller pieces in the range use a frame in veneered wood particle panel, while other sizes step up to a frame built from solid wood over a veneered wood particle panel, giving the collection two readings of the same base shape, one lighter in appearance and one with a heavier solid wood edge. An MDF wood fibre panel forms the section beneath that structure, and the visible side is finished in either steel sheet or an HPL laminate panel, with the baseboard repeating that same choice. Adjustable feet in steel and plastic keep the table level on floors that are not perfectly flat.

Because the series groups several small tables into one composition, Surface suits a living room or a den where more than one occasional table is wanted around a sofa, arranged so the wood, steel and laminate surfaces sit close enough together to read as a single idea. Designers choosing between the veneered and solid wood frame options should decide early which suits the room’s other wood tones, since the two are distinct choices rather than interchangeable finishes of one table.
