The inverted L-shaped die-cast aluminium foot is the detail that makes the rest of the Charles sofa possible. It lifts the upholstered volume clear of the floor so the single long seat cushion and the loose back cushions can read as a simple line rather than a stacked block, and it gives Antonio Citterio’s 1997 design the lightness that defines its presence in a room. The name is a tribute to Charles Eames, whose insistence that details make the design is the idea Charles is built around.

The system includes 16 elements. Linear two-seat and three-seat sofas, corner configurations, chaise longue terminals, and peninsula arrangements all come from the same kit. Citterio thought of it as a continuation of his Sity sofa from a decade earlier, though the curves of Sity gave way here to something more restrained. Nearly thirty years on, Charles remains B&B Italia’s most specified sofa system. The feet come in three finishes: bronzed nickel, bright brushed, or black chrome.
