Belt Armchair

The idea behind Belt is a leather or fabric belt that wraps around the body of the chair the way a real belt wraps a waist, running the profile of the seat before breaking off and fastening at the front. In the leather version, the belt is sewn from leather strips using the technique of fine luggage rather than upholstery, letting it stay a crisp, consistent line rather than a soft fold.

A shell of foam over an elastic-webbed metal frame forms the enveloping backrest, coated in fire-resistant foam and wrapped in a breathable cotton casing before the belt detail and the main cover go on. The fabric version joins its panels with a strip of cotton gros-grain rather than a plain seam, while the leather version uses the same leather as the rest of the chair for the belt, hand-stitched to keep the line even around the curve of the seat. Two zippers hidden under the seat, where the belt ends meet, let the whole cover come off for cleaning. The armchair sits on a die-cast aluminium base in a polished finish that echoes the metal fittings on a fine leather bag, and the same base is also built in a stained wood option.

The armchair suits a living room or hotel suite lounge where one clearly designed chair should stand apart from a plainer sofa nearby. Its family also includes a sofa, a bergere with footstool, a smaller lounge version and a dining-scaled little armchair, so the belt detail can carry across a group of pieces. Designers should choose fabric or leather early, since the belt is built differently for each, and decide whether the aluminium or wood base suits the room.
