Angie Armchair

Angie wraps the armchair in a rigid saddle-hide or leather wing, a structural piece that supports the frame the way a fitted bustier supports a garment, while the seat and backrest inside stay soft. Building that wing takes two separate molds, since the curve is shaped and upholstered as a stiff, self-supporting form rather than draped fabric, and the same firm material shows again on the back, deliberately visible rather than hidden.

The contrast between the stiff outer wing and the soft interior is the whole design argument: a saddle-hide shell in one shade against an interior of fabric or a different leather makes the wing read as a separate element rather than an extension of the seat. A newer Angie Cover version drops the wing and upholsters the whole chair in fabric or leather instead, for a household wanting the shape without the contrast. Either way, the seat cushion holds channeled goose down over a memory-foam core, and the legs are cast aluminium in a polished pewter finish, joined at the rear by a bow-shaped bar that follows the wing’s curve.

The saddle-hide version suits a room where the chair is seen from more than one angle, since the back gets the same care as the front, a living room centre rather than a corner. The Angie Cover version, a plainer single-material chair, sits more easily into a room already carrying strong colour or pattern. Because the wing’s inner shell can only be recovered in fabric, anyone set on an all-leather chair should choose the interior leather at the same time as the shell, since the two are fixed together once made.
