Yoko Armchair

Yoko sets a Japanese name against a Scandinavian line, and the chair carries both influences in its frame: the leg meets the armrest at a visible joint, front and back, a piece of cabinet-making usually hidden that here is left on show. The same family extends to a dining little armchair and a bench, sharing a dual lightness, physical in the slender frame and visual in how open the chair looks.

The frame is solid ash with an open-pore lacquer in a dark licorice colour, or solid Canaletto walnut with a lighter stain, and the choice between the two changes the whole tone of the chair. Seat and backrest sit on a metal frame coated in flame-resistant foam and wrapped in a breathable fibre laminated to white cotton, and on the armchair an extra layer of channeled goose down sits over that base for a softer feel than the dining version gets. A bronze-toned decorative screw marks each armrest near the backrest, echoing the joinery below it. Covers, fabric or leather, come off completely.

Because the joint is meant to be seen, Yoko suits a room where the chair stands clear of a wall rather than tucked into a corner. The ash version reads quieter next to pale floors, while the walnut brings more contrast into a lighter room. Designers pairing the armchair with the matching dining chair should decide on one wood tone for the set, since mixing ash and walnut in the same room works against the joint detail that ties the family together.
