Alanda ’18

Alanda ’18 revisits a design first shown in the 1980s, one of the objects most associated with that decade’s willingness to borrow bold, architectural shapes for furniture and shrink them to table scale. Its structure, working as both pedestal and support, is built from a geodetic frame recalling a cluster of upturned pyramids rather than a plain set of legs, which sets it apart from a plain, straight legged coffee table.

The frame is steel rod, painted, letting the pyramid cluster stay light in appearance while holding up a glass top. That glass top is the other half of the argument: a transparent surface lets the geodetic frame beneath stay visible rather than hidden under a solid material. Plastic ferrules protect the top where it meets the frame, and felt sits at the points where the frame would otherwise mark the floor.

In a living room, Alanda ’18 works best where the frame is seen from more than one angle, so an open seating arrangement suits it better than a table pushed against a wall. Offered in two sizes, it can sit as the single coffee table in a smaller room or pair with the larger size in a bigger living area.
