Fil Noir Dining Chair

The Fil Noir dining chair takes the shape of the larger Fil Noir armchair and scales it down for use at a table without losing its enveloping backrest form. A flexible, thermoformed cushion at the backrest gives that smaller frame the same lower-back support as the bigger piece, sized for a dining setting rather than a lounge.

Matte black painted metal tubing forms the visible frame, with decorative joint details finished in a contrasting polished metal accent. The seat and backrest sit on a metal frame with elastic strap webbing, coated in fire-resistant foam and lined in a self-bonding fibre laminated to cotton canvas for a softer feel against the metal underneath. The backrest cushion is removable and built from a flexible thermoformed shell in the same fire-resistant foam, letting it flex slightly under the sitter’s back rather than staying rigid like the tubing around it. Fabric covers come off by removing the metal structure; leather is applied fixed to the frame and stays in place.

The compact scale and metal frame suit a dining room where a run of chairs needs to read as light around the table, and the same reasoning carries into a restaurant or private dining room where chairs move constantly. Because it shares its design with the larger Fil Noir armchair, it can be specified alongside that piece in one connected scheme. Designers choosing between fabric and leather should note that only the fabric version can later be recovered.
