Jens

Jens takes two references that do not usually meet, a typical 1950s style and the proportions of classical Chinese chairs, and works them into one contemporary frame. The collection includes chairs with and without armrests as well as stools, built from the same idea: rediscovering the craftsmanship of turned and curved wood to produce a frame worked on five axes rather than the flatter joinery of a simpler chair, offered across a variety of wood finishes.

The seat comes in more than one material logic. In its simplest form the seat is shaped polyurethane over a veneered, multi-layered wood panel, keeping the chair light while following the curved frame around it. In another version, the seat is built from an interlacing of cellulose rope, a woven surface that suits a chair meant to look handmade. The solid wood frame carries plastic ferrules and reinforcements, and where the collection moves to full upholstery, the cover is a thick leather across seat and back.

Because Jens spans several structural logics under one frame, from bare wood to rope to thick leather, it works as a dining chair specified differently around the same table, mixing the rope version with the leather backed version without breaking the shared frame. Designers building a dining room around a mid-century reference should decide early which seat material carries the room.
