Russell Armchair

Russell reworks the composed proportions of midcentury upholstered seating into a family running from a soft, enveloping lounge armchair through dining chairs, a bergere, a sofa and an ottoman. The armchair keeps the deep, wrapping shape, while the covering, in fabric or leather, carries that reference forward into a contemporary reading.

A fixed armchair rests on a crossed metal base finished in bronze, with feet sheathed in moka-stained oak, a pairing Russell repeats across its fixed pieces. The swivel version turns instead on a base of wooden spokes in the same oak, returning to its resting position after use. The seat cushion is filled with channeled goose down over a high-resilience foam core, and both cushion and structure covers come off completely, in fabric and in leather. Covering can also be mixed, a leather back with fabric inside, so the two materials work against each other rather than matching.

The fixed armchair suits a settled seating group where it need not turn, paired with the Russell sofa or standing alone beside a console. The swivel version earns its place where a single chair answers more than one part of a room, at a corner or beside a reading lamp facing away from the rest of the furniture. Because the covering is fully removable in leather and fabric alike, either version can be reupholstered later without replacing the chair.
