Tobi-Ishi Table

Tobi-Ishi takes its name from the stones used to cross a traditional Japanese garden pond, set so a person appears to step from one to the next without a fixed path underneath. The low table borrows that idea directly: each top is set on a base that reads as a single poised support, and a counterweight built into the structure is what actually keeps that apparently balanced arrangement stable.

The table is built in three distinct versions that change how it reads in a room. In the lacquered version, an MDF top sits on legs in high density polyurethane resin, with a cast iron counterweight hidden inside the base and adjustable plastic ferrules underfoot. A wood version pairs a veneered top with solid wood legs, a steel coupling plate and counterweight, and steel and plastic ferrules, giving the piece more structural presence than the lacquered top. The marble version carries both top and legs in marble, finished matt or glossy, with a stainless steel coupling plate inside and felt pads at the base so the stone does not mark a hard floor.

As a low table for a living room, Tobi-Ishi works best where the base itself is meant to be seen, since the design depends on that apparent balance rather than a conventional four-leg stance. A designer choosing between the three versions is really choosing how much visual weight the piece should carry against the seating around it, from the lighter lacquered top through to the marble version’s greater mass, and should check the floor finish against the felt or plastic ferrules supplied with each.
