Macchina Della Luce

Macchina della Luce grew out of an earlier collection built around the colour of light itself, the warm gold of sunlight and firelight, and the idea of refraction bending that light rather than simply casting it. The fixture is built as a stack of diffuser discs rather than one shade, so light passes through and bounces between layers before it reaches the room.

Each disc is lined with leaf, giving the diffused light its warm cast, and the discs hang from rods in brass or aluminium above a nickel base. The rods are made in a variable length, and Catellani & Smith offer the fixture in several models with different numbers of LED sources.

Each disc is large, and the whole fixture is a pendant made to hang in open space. Its stacked form suits a stairwell, double height entry, or dining room where a pendant is meant to be seen from more than one level. A designer specifying it should settle on the disc configuration and rod length early.
