Torii Nest Armchair

Torii is a large modular family, seats, tables and consoles built from a design idea borrowed from the entrance gates at Shinto shrines: horizontal elements laid across vertical supports so the frame reads as a chain of open gateways. Within that family the Small armchair takes the idea elsewhere in its Nest version, replacing the usual metal frame with a solid ash wood body and setting a braided leather backrest, patterned after woven straw, into the wood rather than upholstering it as a padded cushion.

That braided backrest is the defining material decision: leather worked into a woven pattern rather than left flat and quilted, held inside a solid ash frame that continues into a base built from the same wood. Where the wider Torii range pairs a metal leg structure with a marble or lacquered top, the Nest armchair commits to one material throughout, frame and base in ash, reading as a single wooden object with a woven leather panel set into it rather than upholstery on a metal stand.

Because it stands apart from the rest of the Torii system in material and construction, the Nest armchair works best as a single accent seat rather than lined up beside the family’s metal-framed sofas, in a reading corner or beside a console where the woodwork and woven backrest can be seen up close. It suits a room that already carries some natural wood tone, since the ash body is the dominant material rather than a hidden frame under fabric. Designers combining it with other Torii pieces should treat it as a contrast, ash and leather against metal and marble.
