Saké works from an unusual image: a flat platform that appears to float, like a flying carpet, with cushions enclosing its edges and feet set beneath to hold it to the ground. The system comes in three seat sizes, with an embracing or a linear back and armrests in several widths, so a sofa is assembled piece by piece to fit a specific room rather than bought as one fixed shape. A sofa bed version shares the same seating and back elements as the rest of the range.

An internal frame in tubular steel and steel profiles carries the seat, back and armrests, each padded in flexible cold shaped polyurethane foam with a polyester fibre cover, while the back cushions add polyester fibre and visco elastic polyurethane in a box style construction that holds its shape under use. The seat carries a modular stitching pattern, and a steel base of crosspieces sits on rounded feet joined by a bar, just 19 cm off the ground. The cover is fabric or leather.

Saké’s mix of seat sizes and back styles suits a sectional built to an irregular or open plan room rather than a straight wall, since linear and embracing backs combine within the same run. Where a sofa bed is needed, the same elements carry over, so a guest bed does not read as an addition. Designers should settle on seat depth and back style early, since those choices set every other module’s proportions.
