Tobi-Ishi Outdoor Table

Tobi-Ishi Outdoor is the outdoor version of B&B Italia’s Zen inspired indoor table of the same name, keeping the name’s reference to tobi-ishi, the polished stepping stones used ornamentally in traditional Japanese gardens. The design carries over the overhang of the top and the vertical trapezoidal bases set at right angles, a combination that reads as a different shape depending on where it is viewed from, and in the outdoor version the top and legs are cast in cement.

The top and legs are cast in cement, an Ultra High Performance Concrete, giving the trapezoidal bases the weight and rigidity the stepping stone reference depends on. A galvanized sheet coupling plate joins the cast sections together, and stainless steel feet carry the table’s weight at the point of ground contact. Ferrules in a thermoplastic material sit at the base as well.

As an outdoor dining or occasional table, Tobi-Ishi Outdoor suits a garden or terrace setting where the stepping stone idea can be read from more than one angle, a courtyard or a poolside spot where guests approach from different sides rather than one fixed seat plan. Designers should confirm the trapezoidal base’s footprint against the seating planned around it.
