Caratos Armchair

The Caratos armchair comes in two different readings of the same idea. The armchair itself is offered with a high or low tub backrest, built on fluid shapes and a lightweight frame, while the smaller Caratos armchair drops the tub shape for an enveloping upholstered back that folds into the armrest instead of sitting apart from it. That second version is built specifically to be free of the postural constraints a tub backrest imposes, which favours conversation and turning toward whoever is nearby rather than sitting fixed forward.

Both versions share a base frame in painted die-cast aluminium, cast in an aluminium alloy underneath a polypropylene shell. The internal frame is tubular steel and steel profiles, padded in a flexible, cold-shaped polyurethane foam over a polyester fibre cover, and the seat cushion on certain versions adds sterilized down into the polyurethane fill for a softer top layer. Ferrules are plastic, and the chair is covered in either fabric or leather, a choice that changes the character of the piece more than the frame underneath it does.

The high or low tub version suits a living room seating group built for facing conversation, while the smaller armchair, with its open enveloping back, works better pulled into a looser arrangement where people turn toward each other rather than sit in a fixed row. Designers combining both versions in one room should keep the shared aluminium base and cover choice consistent across them, since that is what ties the two different backrest shapes together as one collection.
