Harbor Laidback Chair

Harbor Laidback takes the inverted truncated cone shape of the original Harbor armchair and gives it a function the standing chair never had: a synchronized reclining mechanism, hidden inside the frame, that moves the backrest and seat together rather than tilting the back alone. A single lever set between the cushion and the armrest releases the mechanism, and letting go locks the backrest at whatever angle it has reached.

The frame is built in tubular steel and steel profiles, padded with a flexible cold shaped polyurethane foam under a polyester fibre cover, and it swivels on a four spoke aluminium base with a galvanized steel support structure. The reclining mechanism is a galvanized steel laminate assembly with a separate plastic locking device, alongside a height adjustable headrest whose counterweight, in anodized aluminium and steel, keeps it from drifting once set. The upholstery carries a visible double needle lapped seam in fabric or leather, or a sellier topstitch seam on leather, and a zip crosses the backrest as a visual link to the rest of the Harbor family.

Because Harbor Laidback is built as a hybrid piece, at home in a work environment as much as a domestic one, it suits a private office or a study as easily as a living room, with seat proportions calibrated for a laptop, a tablet or a video call rather than upright conversation. A matching footrest and a round ottoman with a removable wood tray extend the same chair into a reading setup, so designers should decide up front whether both belong in the same space.
