Tufty Bed carries the square tufted cover pattern that defines the wider Tufty Time family straight onto a bed, keeping the same reference to Chesterfield and capitonne upholstery in a distinctly contemporary form. The more useful decision sits underneath: rather than standing the frame on visible legs and leaving the space below empty, the base runs down to the floor and turns that space into a storage compartment, built into the bed rather than added beside it.

The frame is built in tubular steel and steel profiles, padded with a flexible cold shaped polyurethane foam under a polyester fibre cover to hold the tufted squares in shape. The storage compartment beneath is closed by a slatted base built from tubular steel and multi-layered wood, raised as one piece by a manually controlled gas-lift rather than requiring the mattress to be moved separately, and an internal shelf in MDF wood fibre panel organizes the space once it is open. The bed stands on solid wood feet, with a steel corner plate and thermoplastic ferrules where the slatted base meets its fixed support.

Tufty Bed suits a bedroom where storage space matters as much as the look of the headboard, since the compartment underneath can hold bedding or seasonal items that would otherwise need a separate piece of furniture in the room. Designers should confirm how the gas-lift base is accessed from the finished room, since clearance is needed on at least one side to raise it.
