Spool’s recognisable shape, in a strong colour, is what makes it read as a punctuation mark inside a room rather than a conventional side table. B&B Italia built it as part of the wider Dock system, where its bold form and finish are meant to stand out against the system’s more restrained pieces.

The body is printed and painted rigid polyurethane finished to a glossy surface, built around an internal steel pin and set on felt ferrules that protect the floor it stands on rather than metal or plastic glides.

Its internal steel pin sits inside the hard polyurethane body, so the only parts that meet the floor are the felt ferrules. Spool suits a living room already built around the Dock system, where it works as the compact, bold accent piece beside larger, quieter furniture, or as a stand alone side table next to a sofa or armchair. A designer placing it in a room that leans neutral should treat Spool as the one piece meant to draw the eye, rather than adding several other strongly finished pieces alongside it.
